Steps to Create Your Scratchboard Drawing:
1. Find a Good Close-Up Photo:
- Look for a high-quality close-up photo of an animal.
- Ensure the photo has good lighting to highlight details.
- If you have a pet, take a portrait photo with defined lighting.
2. Prepare Your Image:
- If you have a printer, print out the selected photo.
- Use tracing paper to transfer the image onto the scratchboard. To do this:
- Place the tracing paper over the printed photo and trace the outlines and main details.
- Flip the tracing paper and place it on the scratchboard.
- Rub the back of the tracing paper with a pencil or any blunt tool to transfer the graphite lines onto the scratchboard.
- If you are working from a monitor, lightly sketch the image directly onto the scratchboard using a pencil.
3. Start Scratching:
- Use an Exacto knife or another sharp tool to scratch the surface of the scratchboard.
- Follow these tips:
- Work in the direction of the animal’s fur to create a realistic texture.
- Start with light scratches to build up the fur texture gradually.
- Focus on details such as the eyes, nose, and fur patterns to enhance realism.
- Avoid making an outline of the animal. Instead, use the scratching technique to define the edges naturally.
4. Finishing Touches:
- Periodically use a soft brush to clear off the scratch dust.
- Continue to refine the details until you are satisfied with the overall look.
5. Submit Your Work:
- Once completed, take a high-quality photo of your scratchboard drawing.
- Submit the photo to D2L (Desire2Learn) as instructed.
Tips for Success:
- Take your time to carefully observe the fur patterns and details in your reference photo.
- Practice scratching techniques on a scrap piece of scratchboard before starting on your main piece.
- Keep your workspace clean to avoid smudging your work.
By following these steps and techniques, you can create a detailed and realistic scratchboard drawing of an animal.
